As we know, of total body weight nearly 60 % is water weight, which is usually considered as total body water weight in short TBW. Therefore, again, this 100 % total body water (TBW) is distributed between two major compartments of the body. One is called Extracellular and another is Intracellular compartment. Extracellular contains nearly 45 % of total body water and 27 % of total body weight. Intracellular compartment, on the other hand, contains 65 % of body water and 33 % of total body weight. By the way, the amount of water, which is distributed into intracellular compartment, is called intracellular water.
Intracellular water is that fluid which stays inside the cell membrane. Intracellular water inside the cell membrane is containing dissolved ions as well as other components at same time. The exact portion of intracellular fluid is almost two-thirds of total body water as I already have mentioned earlier in this article. To run one’s normal cell functioning okay, it plays a key role.
The composition of Intracellular Water
Intracellular water generally contains oxygen, glucose, and electrolytes. It usually comprises the cytosol.it also comprises nearly 19 L of total body water.It contains high concentration of potassium, phosphate magnesium, sulfate ions. In intracellular, you may find that the concentration of both sodium ions and potassium ions are low and high respectively. Intracellular occurs because of normal cellular substances like-lipid, water, protein, carbohydrate, and because of abnormal substances like- endogenous, exogenous into tissues. A substance like exogenous usually include minerals or product of infectious agents and on the other side, endogenous include synthetic and metabolic products. It is, perhaps, transient or permanent and may be harmless but sometimes occasionally harmful. It may be found in cytoplasm or nucleus.
Comparing to pure water, intracellular water is in more ordered state. Very little of intracellular water is possible to consider as solely a medium. But, it may be considered as metabolic reactant, catalyst, chaperone, controller, and messenger.
It is thought that the conformation and function of every biomolecule through direct interaction with hydration shell is done in intracellular water. But the most significantly the structuring of water is possibly controlled by some cellular constituents.

There is no direct relation has come in my notice about Intracellular Water with weight loss or gain. Yet, further, research should be carried on to find out anything about it. As weight loss always matters many, so a concrete connection of Intracellular Water with weight loss program either could be favorable or unfavorable may ease anxiety of most of us.
Finally, I would like to clear the theme about intracellular water with the following words that it is the water stays inside cells which usually bathes all the essential biological molecule such as –nucleic acids, proteins. Hence, to maintain proper water balance, the distribution of water between the two compartments i.e. intracellular and extracellular both have to remain relatively constant.
