Nayak Raj Razzak

Bangladeshi renowned film actor Adur Razzak is widely known as Nayak Raj Razzak (king of heroes) amongst the masses. He is one of the very few actors in Bangladeshi mainstream filmdom expressed as Dhaliwood, who have an academic knowledge in film study and have the potential to win the hearts of the audience through good looks and powerful acting.

Born on 23 January 1942 in Kolkata, Razzak had fascination for art and culture from his boyhood. At his adolescent, he used to participate in theatre productions in Kolkata. While studying at a college in Kolkata, he for the first time appeared in the movie titled “Ratan Lal Bangali”. With the aim to be a film star, Razzak went to learn film study in Filmalaya in Mumbai, India in 1959. Returning from Mumbai, he performed in two movies in Kolkata titled “Pankotilak” and “Shilalipi”. He could manage to develop his access to the Kolkata based movie industry. However, the Hindu-Muslim riot broke out in 1964 forced Razzak and his family to migrate to Dhaka.

Though Razzak had the target to rule the East Pakistani movie industry, after the migration, he found the path was not so easy for him. Initially, however, he started acting in TV plays. He became a favourite of the viewers of Pakistan television acting in the series Ghoroa. But, he was not derailed from his dream of becoming a ‘film star’. A pioneer filmmaker in Bangladesh Abdul Jabbar Khan created an opportunity for Razzak to his dream come true. Khan helped Razzak to join Iqbal Films Limited. He was the assistant to the director Kamal Ahmed in the movie Ujala.

After giving a wonderful performance in Salahuddin’s classic comedy Tero Nombor Feku Ostagar Lane, he became unparallel. After which he only rose upwards due to his indomitable talent. He went on to make more than 300 appearances in popular movies including “Jibon Theke Neya”, “Maynamati”, “Obujh Mon”, “Beimaan”, “Neel Akasher Nichey”, “Oshikkhito”, “Chhutir Ghonta” and “Baadi Theke Begum”.

Like the other seasoned actors of the Bangladeshi filmdom, Razzak does find comfortable acting in movies produced by Dhaliwood industry these days, since most of the movies produced from the industry are below standard and logically has a very limited market. He went on to make more than 300 appearances in Bangla and other movies. He also directed around sixteen movies. Abdur Razzak has won the national film award in Bangladesh several times. Razzak is also a UNFPA goodwill ambassador.

Awards

Razzak won National Award for Best Actor five times for the films - Ki Je Kori, Oshikkhito, Boro Bhalo Lok Chhilo, Chandranath and Jogajog. In 2013 he won National Award for Lifetime Achievement.
